Yoko Matsumoto

Lives and works in Tokyo
B. 1936

Committed to the principle of ‘painting with colour and form alone’, the Japanese artist Yoko Matsumoto (b.1936, Tokyo) creates immersive compositions in a reduced palette that articulate the primacy of painterly expression. Produced during periods of deep concentration, her abstract, labour-intensive canvases harness the agency of colour as both a conveyor and collaborator. Over six decades, she has crafted a unique expressive visual language that is informed by lineages of Japanese art and the tenets of Western abstraction.
