Characteristic of Ilana Savdie’s work, Ecdysis melds figuration and abstraction; the creaturely protagonist rendered in a deep, visceral shade of Geranium Red ink can be seen to dissolve through areas of dense mark-making. Produced to coincide with Savdie’s solo exhibition at White Cube Paris, this gravure print is the artist’s first foray into printmaking.
This edition shares imagery with the artist’s painting Cow, created the previous year, and both painting and edition emerge from Savdie’s encounter with Mary III (1974), by the late Susan Rothenberg, who was known for her paintings of horses. Unusually, however, in Mary III Rothenberg rendered not a horse but an animalistic human positioned on all fours. The primally charged scene, which inspired the crouching central figure in Savdie’s edition, fascinated the latter artist in its ambiguity between forcible submission and a will to be dominated.

Ecdysis touches upon several major themes underpinning Savdie’s artistic practice, from the monstrosity of in-between states to the pressures of societal expectation and, in the artist’s own words, ‘failure as a performance that articulates modes of dissent’.

Marking the artist’s first solo exhibition in France, ‘Ectopia’ presents new paintings and works on paper that further Ilana Savdie’s exploration of performance and theatricality as responses to structures of power, focusing on the concept of spectacle and the figure of the hero that emerges from it.
