Minty in the Sausage Factory, spring 2016 is a hand-etched portrait of Shaw’s late dachshund, Minty, in his bespoke studio situated in a converted sausage factory in Peckham, south London. Heartfelt and tender, the work celebrates the kinship between human beings and animals.

Raqib Shaw’s two beloved pet dogs, the late Minty and Mr C, are of great importance to Shaw and hold a sacred place in the artist’s world. As his closest companions, Shaw’s affection for Minty and Mr C is reflected throughout his artistic practice – the pets reappearing in paintings of scenes which shift between the romantic and violent, the mystical and the domestic, the imaginary and the autobiographical. Drawing on traditions of 18th-century dog portraiture, they are often depicted seated in the artist’s lap or at his feet, their grounding presence symbolising faith, loyalty and solace.
